Riding into Battle: Canadian Cyclists in the Great War

A Collingwood Hospital Fundraising event your PROBUS members might be interested in.  Especially those interested in cycling, art and local history.

Ernie Jefferies was a Collingwood artist and a veteran of the First World War.  He was a soldier in the Canadian Corps Cyclist Battalion.  The Corp were trained to pedal their CCM bikes into battle as advance shock troops.  Casualties were staggering.  The Cyclist Corp’s story has been largely forgotten.

Local author Ted Glenn wrote Riding into Battle: Canadian Cyclists in the Great War and will be telling their story on Thursday January 15.  Two presentations are taking place at 2 and 7 pm at the Simcoe Theatre.  Tickets are $25.  All proceeds to the CGMH Foundation and available through their website.

Ernie was my Great Uncle.  He survived the war and upon return, painted Collingwood landscapes.

The Collingwood Art of Ernie Jefferies has never been seen by the public.  Thirty of his paintings will be on display in the Press Gallery at the Simcoe Theatre for the month of January.
