We watch live simulcasts of opera performances from the Metropolitan Opera in New York – usually at the Galaxy Cinema in Collingwood. There are ten dates per season spread out from late September until mid-May. Once the schedule for the following year is published, we circulate to members and will now post on the website.

Performances are always Saturday afternoon, usually starting 12:55 and ending 4:30-5:00. Longer performances occasionally start at 12:00 or 12:30, and if we’re talking Wagner, you may not escape till 6:00. We aim to get there 10-15 minutes early to use the loo and get settled. Some bring their own snacks (healthier than movie-fare).

Current ticket price for seniors is $28. Reserve seating is available on the galaxy website which the coordinator can arrange, but regulars usually sign up for a “Scene” card to get discounts & points towards a free movie and then book in the same area.

Opera plots made simple

• the soprano and the tenor are madly in love;
• the baritone tries to prevent them getting together;
• the contralto helps/hinders the soprano or the baritone;
• odds are 80-20 that bodies will start to pile up.

A few plot variations

• He/she loves her/him – one of them dies;
• They love each other – they both die;
• She’s engaged or married and says:
  Yes! Get me out of here! or,
  No! I won’t leave him!
• He/she is magical and messes with everyone’s mind;
• He/she is ill or mad or under a spell due to one of the above;
• Odds are still 80-20 that bodies will start to pile up.
